LEGO® Worlds

Updated: Mar 12, 2020

Since I can remember, I've always had a soft spot for LEGO®. My first set was LEGO® Knights' Kingdom: Vladek's Dark Fortress, a gift from my dad and aunt that sparked what would become a lifelong hobby. As an adult, my LEGO® endeavors are more on the collecting side, but the LEGO® video games are still something I find myself coming back to enjoy after all these years. And right now, I'm playing LEGO® Worlds.

LEGO® Worlds is like the final evolution in terms of LEGO® video games; it's the perfect balance of zany characters, wacky action, and tons of humor with the infinite possibilities that come with procedural generation. I picked up LEGO® Worlds on Xbox Game Pass a few days ago and I've had one hell of a time playing!

The object of LEGO® Worlds is to become a Master Builder (any fans of the LEGO® Movie?), but becoming a Master Builder isn't a simple task. You must collect gold bricks from minifig characters across the LEGO® Worlds to unlock and obtain new upgrades, explore increasingly larger worlds, and learn to use powerful tools that help you build smarter and faster. As of writing this post, I've collected 43 of 100 gold bricks - that makes me a Collector Builder, just one of several builder ranks you’ll achieve along the way to Master Builde.

As I mentioned above, the worlds you explore are procedurally generated, or in laymen terms, randomly generated with a special algorithm that uses "seeds" to guarantee no two worlds will be identical. This type of world building is utilized in games like Minecraft, Terraria, and Starbound. The first few tutorial worlds are hard-set by the game in terms of the biomes you’ll explore, but the layout and geography are generated randomly. You'll learn the basics while exploring Pirate Playground, Prehistoric Peril, and Candy Construction Capers respectively before moving on to completely randomized worlds.

Thus far in my playthrough, I've explored the Lawless Lagoon, Fearsome Frontier, Colossal Corals, Winter Wonderland, Wicked Wasteland, and the Playful Prairie - and that's just a few of the many different biomes (there’s 22 in all!) you can explore in LEGO® Worlds. I can't wait to explore, build, and customize as I make my way to the rank of Master Builder.
