Oh yeah, you read that right: Pokémon GO is adding new ways to line your trainer’s pockets with PokéCoins.
According to an update from the Pokémon GO team posted today, trainers can expect new methods of earning PokéCoins, the in-game currency used to purchase supplies, upgrades, and cosmetics in the shop.
As of now, PokéCoins can only be obtained via two methods: earning them by defending a friendly gym with Pokémon, or by purchasing them through micro-transactions. The new update will allow players to complete daily tasks similar to field research to net themselves 5 PokéCoins a day. Take a look at some of the daily tasks mentioned in the update article:
Make an Excellent Throw
Evolve a Pokémon
Make a Great Throw
Use a Berry to help catch a Pokémon
Take a snapshot of your buddy
Catch a Pokémon
Power up a Pokémon
Make a Nice Throw
Transfer a Pokémon
Win a raid
This all sounds great for sure, but there’s a catch: according to the article, “In order to balance this new method of earning PokéCoins, the number of PokéCoins earned from defending Gyms will be reduced from six per hour to two. The maximum number of PokéCoins you can earn in a day will be increased to 55.”
This means that while yes, you may earn 5 PokéCoins per day from your couch, you’ll also have to leave your Pokémon in a gym longer than before to earn the maximum amount of coins each day.
So when will this update roll out? While the Pokémon GO team has’t provided any specific dates yet, they have announced who will be seeing the update first: “We’ll soon be testing this update only with Trainers in Australia, and it’ll be coming to all Trainers after this testing phase - During the initial rollout in Australia, we will collect feedback and perform additional testing based on the results.”
Let’s wish our fellow trainers in the Outback good luck with testing out this cool new feature for the rest of the global Pokémon GO community!
